The time-traveling fashionista on board the Titanic by Bianca Turetsky is a mixture of fashion, heroism, history and heritage. With a touch of magic.
Louise, a young teenage girl, who loves vintage clothing, receives a mysterious invitation to a vintage clothing sale, at a store she didn't know existed and just in time for the prom! She goes and discovers the most breathtaking vintage clothing. She immediately falls in love with a classic pink dress, but on trying it on, discovers it is more than it seems, as she is whisked back in time into the body of the dresses former owner. The problem? The former owner is a movie starlet who is on the first and last voyage of the Titanic!
Louise, like any teenager would once past the shock, starts by immensely enjoying the luxury and attention she is given as Miss Baxter. She meets amazing people, including one of her fashion idols. Its all amazingly awesome until she discovers she is on the Titanic. That's when she panics and desperately tries to tell anyone who will listen, who she truly is in order to save the ship.
The characters she comes across are mostly based on real-life people from the Titanic and are fascinating. The dresses that Louise as Miss Baxter wears and those she comes across on other characters are beautifully illustrated throughout the book and it was a joy to be able to see them as well as read about them. The outfits are as much a character of the story as Louise is.
I found this an easy read and enjoyed turning the page to discover a full illustration of a dress I had just read about. Getting an insight into the period and its people was also interesting and the twist at the end, although not unexpected, is icing on the cake.
If you love fashion or have an interest in period pieces, or are just curious about the Titanic, then I'm sure you'll enjoy reading Louise' adventure.
