The Scorpio Races: Maggie Stiefvater

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races.
Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.
Some riders live. Others die.

Every year the water horses rise from the sea. They are dangerous, deadly and unpredictable. Only the brave will race in the Scorpio Races. This year reigning champion Sean Kendrick is returning for the race. Sean is unlike the other racers he and his horse are bonded with Sean gifted with the ability to communicate with the water horses. This year Sean will race for everything he loves...

Puck Connelly never wanted to race in the Scorpio races but when fate leaves her no other choice Puck will become the first female rider in the history of the races. The journey to the race will be just as hard for Puck as the race itself. Nothing will prepare Puck or Sean for what is to come. There’s never been a race quiet like this...

Maggie Stiefvater is back creating a dark and deadly world that is enticing and frightening. Lead characters Puck and Sean are completely different yet the reader can identify with both of them. I also enjoyed watching their relationship grow from indifference, to friendship to something more. The Scorpio races is not for the faint hearted there is death, blood, gore and violence. Stiefvater will have your heart racing till the very end. I can’t praise Stiefvater enough her writing style and imagination, it makes for one hell of a read. Add this one to your reading list for 2012; it’s unmissable.

Courtney :)
