Our Little Secret

In Our little secret, fourteen year old Edwina Saltbush is the wryly humorous narrator of this story. Various family events are hilariously conveyed. Like, for instance, the accidental fire her brothers start at the local Church, quickly averted by the Reverend who throws Communion water on the fire. Or the memorable trip to the local show, whereby a caramel cream roll which was to be entered in the cake cooking contest ends up being thrown into a bush.
The main themes in the story are much darker, though. A local girl is raped walking home from school, and local attitudes are far from sympathetic. Edwina, too, has a dreadful secret which becomes too much for her to bear.
Powerful writing by Australian author, Allayne Webster.
