Absolutely True Diary ...

Once you start reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, I guarantee you will find it very hard to put the book down.

The main character is Junior, an American Indian boy living on a reservation. The reservation is depicted as a desperate place in which to live. Alcohol fuelled violence is commonplace, as is poverty. Junior has other worries too - he has been born with brain damage and is regularly taunted and attacked by members of the community.
After a discussion with his teacher, Junior decides to transfer schools and attend the all-white junior high school at Reardon, 22 kilometres from the reservation.

The odds are stacked against him..

This is a very well-written book, full of hope and humour amidst the difficult circumstances of Junior's upbringing and surroundings.

Recommended reading for teenagers, and winner of the USA National Book Award for 2007.
