Bye Beautiful

How would you like a job where you can wear a tracksuit to work each day?
According to Australian teenage author, Julia Lawrinson, this is one of the best things about being an author!

Julia is a very impressive and talented writer. She strongly evokes a sense of place and time in her novels, and her characters are well developed and believable.

'Bye Beautiful' is one such example. Set in rural Western Australia in the 1960's, Julia conveys the racial attitudes of the time, as well as male/female relationships and social mores.

The story is told through the eyes of Sandy, a shy teenager. Sandy and her family move to a small town where her father is to be the new sergeant in the police station.

Sandy is attracted to Billy, a part Aboriginal youth, but then discovers her beautiful sister and Billy have eyes for each other.

There is a sense of uneasiness and foreboding that steadily builds throughout the novel, until it reaches a dramatic conclusion.

Recommended reading for teenagers.
